What makes a job last, and look right for years, is everything that happens before the colour goes on and the care taken at the edges. We're a family-owned, owner-operated company and the painting division of Carleton Prime Construction, an Ottawa renovation company. Our own painters do the work, and the team has over 100 years of combined experience. Over the years we've been called in to fix jobs other contractors started, and the lesson is always the same: projects go wrong because of rushed prep, shortcuts and unclear expectations, not because of the paint. 100+ years of combined painting experience on the team - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business QualityHonestyIntegrityLocal ## What we paint Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. What a painting customer said I asked them to re-paint some rooms in my house, and the painter did an excellent job. The mistakes from years ago were erased. He even painted behind the toilets. Here's what good prep covers. - ## Protect Floors, furniture, fixtures and anything that stays in the room get covered or moved. - ## Repair Nail holes, dents, cracks and old patches get filled and sanded so they disappear under the paint. - ## Clean and sand Dirty, glossy or greasy surfaces get cleaned and scuffed so new paint grips instead of peeling. - ## Prime where it's needed Patches, stains, bare wood and big colour changes get primer so the finish coat looks even. - ## Cut clean lines Edges along ceilings, trim and corners get the slow, careful work that makes a room look finished. - ## The places people skip Behind the toilet, the top edge of the door, behind the radiator. A customer's Google review mentions exactly this. Our process ## How a painting job works - ## Free in-home consultation We come to you, walk the rooms or the outside of the house with you, and listen to what you want the finished result to look like. - ## A written estimate You get the scope in writing: which surfaces, what prep, what's included and what isn't, so there are no surprises later. - ## A schedule that fits your life We book the work around how you use your home, and tell you ahead of time what needs moving and when we'll be there. - ## Prep, then paint Prep comes first and gets the time it needs. Then the painting, done carefully, and a clean site at the end of each day. - ## Walkthrough together We go over every room or wall with you before we call it finished, and fix anything you're not happy with. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Fresh paint changes how a room feels more than almost anything else you can do to it. It also shows every shortcut. Patches that weren't sanded, lines that wander onto the ceiling, a missed strip behind the toilet: those are what you notice every day afterwards. Carleton Prime Painting paints the inside of houses, condos, apartments and cottages across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. A single bedroom or every room in the house, the job gets the same thorough prep and the same clean finish. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## What we paint inside - Walls in any room, from bedrooms and living rooms to kitchens, bathrooms and basements - Ceilings - Trim, baseboards and door and window casings (or just the trim and doors) - Interior doors - Hallways and stairwells, including the awkward high walls - Rooms before a sale, after a move, or once a renovation is done ## Choosing a finish Sheen matters as much as colour. Flatter finishes hide wall imperfections and suit ceilings and quiet rooms. Eggshell and satin are easier to wipe, which is why they're common in hallways, kitchens and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss stands up to the knocks trim and doors take. If you're not sure, we'll talk it through at the consultation and point out what each room needs. ## Living in your home while we paint Most people stay at home while their rooms are painted. We'll tell you ahead of time which rooms we're in and when, what to clear out, and when a room is ready to use again. At the end of each day the work area is tidied, so your house still works as a house. ## What each room needs Every room asks something different of the paint, so the prep and the finish change from room to room. - Kitchens: walls near the stove collect a film of grease that paint won't stick to, so they get cleaned first. A finish you can wipe makes sense here. - Bathrooms: steam and condensation lead to peeling and mildew. A paint made for bathrooms helps, and so does a working exhaust fan. - Basements: damp is the enemy. If a wall is damp or shows white powder on concrete, painting over it won't fix the cause, and we'll tell you so. - Hallways and stairwells: these take the most knocks and have the hardest walls to reach. They get a tougher finish and a safe setup for the high spots. - Ceilings: a flat finish hides the small waves every ceiling has. Water stains need a stain-blocking primer, or they come straight back through. ## Painting an older Ottawa home Older houses in Ottawa often have plaster walls, many layers of old paint, and trim finished in oil-based paint. Water-based paint won't grip glossy oil paint without the right primer, and plaster cracks need proper filling, not just a coat of paint. Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, so tell us when your home was built and we'll plan the prep with that in mind. ## Changing colour Going from a dark colour to a light one, or covering a strong colour like red, usually takes a primer or an extra coat. That's normal, and it's one of the things your estimate accounts for, so the price doesn't change halfway through. Please take down pictures and put away ornaments and anything breakable. Bigger furniture can usually stay in the room, moved away from the walls and covered. We'll tell you exactly what to move at the consultation. Q: Do you paint ceilings as well as walls? Yes. Ceilings are part of interior painting. Tell us which rooms you want done and whether the ceilings are included, and the estimate will list them. Q: Can you fix dents and holes before painting? Yes, the small ones. Filling nail holes, dents and hairline cracks is part of the prep. If we find bigger damage, like a large hole or a water stain, we'll point it out and explain it in your estimate. Q: How long does it take to paint a room? It depends on the size of the room, how much prep it needs, and how many coats the colour takes. A lot of the time goes into prep and drying between coats. Your estimate includes the schedule, so you'll know before we start. ## Related services Exterior paintingPaint that has to survive an Ottawa winter starts with the prep underneath it. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating The outside of an Ottawa house takes real punishment: hot, humid summers, wet springs and falls, and winters that freeze and thaw over and over. Paint on a badly prepared surface lifts, cracks and peels within a few seasons. Paint on a properly prepared surface lasts. Carleton Prime Painting paints the exteriors of homes and cottages across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley, with prep done first and done thoroughly. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## What exterior prep involves - Washing off dirt, mildew and chalky old paint - Scraping and sanding loose or peeling paint - Repairing or filling damaged spots before they're painted over - Priming bare wood and repaired areas - Protecting windows, roofs, decks, plants and walkways ## When to paint outside in Ottawa Exterior paint needs the right weather to cure: dry surfaces, no rain on the way, and temperatures above the minimum printed on the can, overnight as well as during the day. For many exterior paints that minimum is about 10°C, and paints made for cooler weather go down to about 2°C. In Ottawa that usually means late spring to early fall. Spring and early summer dates tend to go first, so it pays to plan early. Our exterior painting season guide explains the timing in more detail. ## Painting the whole house, or one part You can have the whole exterior painted, or just the part that needs it: trim, a front door, a porch, a garage. The estimate spells out exactly which surfaces are included. ## Where exterior paint fails first Paint rarely fails evenly. Look first at the walls that get the most sun, and anywhere water sits: window sills, the bottoms of trim boards and door frames, porch posts and railings, and the ends of boards. If wood there is soft, it needs repair before it's painted. Painting over rot only hides it for a season. ## A note on vinyl and aluminum siding Vinyl and aluminum siding can be painted, but they need the right products. With vinyl, a much darker colour than the original can make the siding soak up heat and warp, which is why paint companies offer special "vinyl-safe" colours. Ask us about your siding at the consultation. In writing ## What your written estimate spells out Two painting quotes only compare fairly when they cover the same work. Usually late spring to early fall. You need dry surfaces, no rain coming, and temperatures above the minimum on the paint can, at night as well as during the day. Early summer dates tend to go first, so book early. Q: Can you paint over peeling paint? Not if you want it to last. Loose paint has to be scraped and sanded off first, or the new paint peels off with it. That prep is a big part of any exterior job. Q: Do you paint cottages? Yes, inside and out, across the Ottawa Valley. See our cottage painting page. Q: Does the warranty cover exterior painting? Yes. Our 2-year warranty on painting covers exterior painting too. ## Related services Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Painting a condo or apartment is a little different from painting a house. There are building rules, elevators to book, loading areas, quiet hours and neighbours on the other side of the wall. Getting those right is part of doing the job well. Carleton Prime Painting paints condos and apartments across Ottawa, whether you live there, rent it out, or are getting it ready to sell. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Before we start - Check your building's rules for contractors, work hours and elevator use - Book the service elevator or loading area if the building requires it - Share proof of our liability insurance and WSIB coverage if management asks for it - Agree on where materials are kept while we work ## Small spaces, careful work Condos have less room to move furniture and fewer places to put it. We plan the order of rooms so you can keep living in the unit, keep the work area protected, and leave common hallways the way we found them. ## Between tenants or before a sale A freshly painted unit usually shows better to buyers and tenants. If you're turning over a rental or listing a condo, tell us your deadline at the consultation and we'll plan the schedule around it. ## Check what belongs to the building In an Ontario condo, some surfaces that feel like yours belong to the condo corporation. Balconies, the hallway side of your front door and parts of the exterior are often common elements, and the corporation decides their colour. Check your condo's declaration and rules, or ask management, before planning to paint anything outside your unit's walls. ## Less space, less air Condos have fewer windows that open and less room to set up. We plan the work one area at a time, keep the rest of the unit usable, and ask you about any pets or anyone at home who is sensitive to smells, so we can plan the order of rooms around them. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Cottages wear differently from city houses. They sit empty for months, deal with damp and shade, and the outside often has more exposed wood. They're also a long drive away, so you need a painter you can trust to get on with the job while you're not there. Carleton Prime Painting paints cottages inside and out across the Ottawa Valley, including the Perth, Smiths Falls and Carleton Place areas. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Planning around your season Many cottage owners want the painting done before opening weekend or after the last visit of the year. Exterior work needs the right weather, so the earlier you get in touch, the more choice you have. We'll agree on access, a schedule and how we'll keep you updated if you're not there. ## What cottages often need - Interior walls and ceilings refreshed after years of use - Exterior siding and trim that's faded or peeling - Bare or weathered wood that needs prep before it's painted - Bunkies, sheds and boathouses that have weathered differently from the main building ## Damp, shade and mildew Cottages near water and under trees stay damp longer, and mildew grows on surfaces that don't dry out. It has to be cleaned off before painting, or it grows back through the new coat. Inside, a cottage that's closed up for the winter can hold moisture too, so we check walls are dry before we paint. ## Pine walls and knots Many cottages have pine boards inside. If you paint pine, the knots can bleed through as yellow-brown spots unless they're sealed first with a primer made for knots. It's a small step that makes a big difference to how the walls look a year later. Cottages across the Ottawa Valley, including around Perth, Smiths Falls and Carleton Place. If your cottage is further out, ask us. Q: Can you paint the inside of a cottage in the off season? Yes, as long as the cottage is heated while we work and while the paint dries. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating If your cabinet boxes and doors are solid but the colour or the stain has had its day, painting them can change the whole kitchen for a fraction of the disruption of replacing them. The counters, the layout and the plumbing all stay where they are. Cabinets are also the hardest thing in a house to paint well. They get handled every day, splashed, wiped and knocked. A cabinet finish only lasts if the prep underneath it is done properly, so that's where most of the time goes. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Why cabinet prep takes so long - Every door and drawer front is cleaned and degreased. Kitchen grease is invisible and paint won't stick to it. - Surfaces are sanded so the primer has something to grip. - A bonding primer goes on before the colour, especially over glossy or stained wood. - Doors, drawer fronts and boxes are painted in thin, even coats, with drying time between them. - Hardware is removed and put back, or replaced if you're changing it. ## Is your kitchen a good candidate? Solid wood and wood veneer cabinets usually paint well, including the oak kitchens common in Ottawa homes from the 1980s and 1990s. Oak has an open grain that can show through paint. Some people like that texture, others want it filled for a smooth look, so it's worth deciding up front. Some finishes, like thermofoil (a plastic skin over the door), peel when painted and are poor candidates. We'll tell you honestly at the consultation. ## Living without your kitchen for a few days Cabinet painting takes longer than painting a room, because of the prep and the drying time between coats. Your estimate includes the schedule, so you can plan meals around it. ## Bathroom vanities too The same process works on bathroom vanities and built-ins, which is a simple way to update a bathroom without a renovation. The leftover paint stays with you for touch-ups. More about how we work ## Questions people ask Q: Is it worth painting kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them? If the boxes and doors are in good shape, painting gives you a new colour for much less disruption than replacing them. If the cabinets are falling apart or the layout doesn't work, replacing them may make more sense. Carleton Prime Construction also does kitchen remodels, so we can talk through both. Q: Can you paint oak cabinets? Yes. Oak paints well with the right prep. Its grain can show through the paint, so decide at the start whether you want that texture or a smooth finish. Q: How long does painted cabinetry last? It depends mostly on the prep and on how hard the kitchen is used. Cabinets that were properly cleaned, sanded and primed hold up far better than ones painted straight over the old finish. Q: Can you paint thermofoil or laminate cabinets? Thermofoil usually isn't a good candidate, because the plastic skin can peel. Some laminates can be painted with the right primer. We'll look at yours at the consultation and tell you honestly. ## Related services Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Decks and fences have the hardest life of any wood around your house. Sun dries them out, rain and snow soak them, and a deck gets walked on all summer. A finish that looks fine in June can be peeling by the next spring if it went on over dirty or wet wood. Carleton Prime Painting stains and paints decks and fences across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. Because Carleton Prime Construction builds decks and fences too, we can also tell you when a board needs replacing rather than covering. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Stain or paint? Semi-transparent stain lets the wood grain show and soaks into the wood. When it wears, it fades rather than peels, which makes recoating easier. Solid stain covers the grain like paint but stays thinner, and it hides older, weathered wood. Paint gives a solid colour, but on a deck floor it wears in walkways and can peel, so it's more common on railings, fences and trim than on deck boards. The right choice depends on the wood, its age and what's on it now. ## The prep that makes it last - Cleaning off dirt, mildew and grey, weathered wood fibres - Removing loose or failing old finish - Replacing or fixing loose, cracked or soft boards first - Letting the wood dry before the finish goes on - Protecting the house, plants and patio around the work ## New pressure-treated wood New pressure-treated lumber is often too wet to take stain well right away. The usual advice is to let it dry out first, and the stain maker's instructions say how to tell when it's ready. Ask us if your deck is new. It depends on the stain, the sun and how much the deck is used. Floors wear faster than railings. When water stops beading on the surface and soaks in, or the colour has faded unevenly, it's usually time. Q: Should I stain or paint my fence? Either works on a fence. Stain shows the wood and fades as it wears. Paint gives a solid colour but will eventually need scraping where it peels. Q: When is the best time to stain a deck in Ottawa? On dry days in late spring, summer or early fall, after the wood has had a few dry days and with no rain in the forecast. The stain can lists its own temperature range. Q: Can you fix boards before staining? Carleton Prime Construction builds decks and fences, so loose, cracked or rotten boards can be dealt with before the finish goes on. ## Related services Exterior paintingPaint that has to survive an Ottawa winter starts with the prep underneath it. Filler also soaks up paint differently from the wall around it, which is why patched spots get primed before the finish coats. ## Bigger drywall work For new walls, renovations or water-damaged drywall that has to be cut out and replaced, Carleton Prime Construction does full drywall installation and finishing. See drywall at carletonprime.com. If a stain or soft spot points to a leak, the leak has to be fixed first, or the damage comes back. Filling small holes, dents and hairline cracks is part of the prep on every job. Bigger repairs are listed in your estimate so you can see what's involved. Q: Why do cracks keep coming back above my doors? Houses move with the seasons, and corners above doors and windows are where that movement shows. Cracks that keep reopening may need to be taped, not just filled, before painting. Q: What is a nail pop? A small round bump or crack where a drywall nail or screw has worked loose and pushed through the surface. It needs to be reset and filled before painting, or it shows through again. Q: Do you repair plaster walls? Yes. Older Ottawa homes often have plaster, and its cracks need to be repaired properly before painting. ## Related services Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Popcorn and stipple ceilings are common in Ottawa houses built from the 1960s through the 1980s. They gather dust and cobwebs, they're hard to patch, and they make a room look its age. Carleton Prime Painting removes popcorn and stipple ceilings and leaves them smooth and painted. Before any of that starts, there's one question that has to be answered: does the texture contain asbestos? - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Asbestos comes first Health Canada says asbestos was commonly used in Canadian homes before 1990, and it advises checking that materials don't contain asbestos before you renovate. You can't tell by looking. A sample has to be taken by a qualified person and tested in a lab. If the texture contains asbestos, it has to be removed by a qualified asbestos removal company before any other work happens. Never scrape a textured ceiling in an older home yourself to find out. ## How removal works - The room is emptied or the furniture covered, and floors and walls are sealed off with plastic - The texture is softened and scraped off - The ceiling is repaired and skim-coated where needed, then sanded smooth - A primer goes on the bare surface - The ceiling is painted ## Expect some dust and a few days Removing a textured ceiling is messier than painting, and the room is out of use until it's done. Your estimate includes the schedule so you can plan around it. Health Canada says asbestos was commonly used in Canadian homes before 1990, so if your home is from before then, have the ceiling tested before it's disturbed. Q: Can you paint over a popcorn ceiling instead? It can be painted, but the texture soaks up a lot of paint, can loosen when wet, and still looks like popcorn afterwards. Most people who dislike the look want it removed. Q: Is the ceiling smooth after removal? That's the goal. After the texture comes off, the ceiling is repaired, skim-coated where needed and sanded before it's primed and painted. Q: How messy is popcorn ceiling removal? Messier than painting. The room is sealed off with plastic and the furniture moved or covered, and the room is out of use until the work is finished. ## Related services Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating Not every house in Ottawa is wood. Many have vinyl or aluminum siding, stucco, brick, or a mix. Each one takes paint differently, and using the wrong product or skipping the right prep is the fastest way to a peeling exterior. Carleton Prime Painting paints all of these surfaces. Here's what each one needs. - Free in-home consultation - 2-year warranty on painting - Liability insurance - WSIB coverage - Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints - Our own painters, family owned - BBB Accredited Business ## Wood siding Wood needs loose paint scraped off, bare spots primed and soft or rotten boards replaced before painting. Joints and gaps get caulked so water can't get behind the paint. ## Vinyl and aluminum siding Both can be painted once they're cleaned thoroughly, with paint made for the surface. Aluminum siding often has a chalky surface that has to be washed off first. With vinyl, a colour much darker than the original can make the siding absorb heat and warp, so paint makers offer "vinyl-safe" colours for it. ## Stucco Stucco has a rough, porous surface that needs a paint made for masonry and the right application to fill the texture. Cracks are repaired first, because water getting into stucco is what damages it in an Ottawa freeze and thaw. ## Brick: think before you paint Painting brick changes the look of a house for good. Once brick is painted, getting it back to bare brick is difficult and expensive. Brick also needs to let moisture out, so it needs a breathable masonry paint, not ordinary house paint. If your brick has white, powdery marks (efflorescence), that's a sign of moisture to deal with first. If your house is in a heritage area, check with your municipality before painting masonry. Choose a colour close to or lighter than the original, or a vinyl-safe colour, because dark colours can make vinyl warp in the sun. Q: Should I paint my brick house? Think it through first. Painted brick is very hard to return to bare brick. If you go ahead, the brick needs a breathable masonry paint, and any moisture problems should be fixed first. Q: Can stucco be painted? Yes, with a paint made for masonry, after cracks are repaired so water can't get in behind the paint. Q: Do I need permission to paint my house exterior? Usually not. If your home is in a heritage district or is a designated heritage property, check with your municipality first, especially before painting brick or stone. ## Related services Exterior paintingPaint that has to survive an Ottawa winter starts with the prep underneath it. Water-based paint won't stick to glossy oil paint without the right primer, so the trim is cleaned, sanded and primed first. Skipping that step is why trim paint sometimes peels off in strips. ## A finish that stands up to knocks Trim and doors usually get a semi-gloss or satin finish. It's tougher than wall paint and easy to wipe, which matters for baseboards near the vacuum and doors near little hands. ## Dark doors and trim Black and dark-coloured doors and trim are popular. They look sharp, but they show dust and every brush mark, so the prep and application need extra care. Dark colours often take more coats too. Some papers peel off in sheets, others come off in tiny strips, and underneath there's usually a layer of glue and sometimes torn drywall. It isn't always visible once it dries, which is why washing the wall properly after the paper comes off is one of the most important steps. ## When the drywall tears If wallpaper was hung straight onto drywall that was never primed, the paper face of the drywall can tear as it comes off. Torn spots need a sealing primer before they're patched, or they bubble when the patch goes on. It's a common surprise, and it's part of why we look at the wall before pricing the job. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 ## The short answer In Ottawa, exterior painting usually runs from late spring to early fall. The exact window changes from year to year with the weather, and it depends on the paint, because every exterior paint lists its own minimum temperature on the can. ## Temperature, day and night Paint doesn't dry and cure properly when it's too cold. For many exterior paints the minimum is about 10°C. Some newer paints are made for cooler weather and can go on at about 2°C. The minimum applies to the surface as well as the air, and it has to hold while the paint dries, which takes longer in cool weather. That's why a cold night can spoil paint that went on during a warm afternoon. In spring, and again in late September and October, Ottawa often has mild days and cold nights. ## Rain, dew and humidity Surfaces have to be dry before painting, and fresh paint needs time to dry before rain hits it. Morning dew on siding has to dry off first, and dew that forms after sunset can settle into paint that hasn't set. Ottawa's humid summer days slow drying, so a good painter watches the forecast and the time of day, not just the date. ## Sun and heat Strong, hot sun can make paint dry too fast and leave lap marks, where one stroke overlaps another that has already dried. Painters often work their way around the house with the shade for this reason. ## Why booking early matters Most people want their house painted in the same few months. If you want the work done in late spring or early summer, start getting estimates in winter or early spring. ## What you can do in the off season Interior painting works all year in a heated house. The off season is also a good time for a consultation and an estimate, so your exterior job is booked before the rush. Sources: Sherwin-Williams: exterior painting temperature FAQ Written by Carleton Prime Painting, Ottawa. Last updated October 23, 2026. ## Quick answers Q: Can you paint a house exterior in October in Ottawa? Sometimes. Early October can work on dry days, especially with a paint made for cooler weather, as long as the overnight temperature stays above the paint's minimum. By late October the good days get rare. Q: How long after painting can it rain? It depends on the paint, the temperature and the humidity. Each paint lists how long it needs to dry, and some are made to resist rain sooner than others. That's why painters plan around the forecast and skip days when rain is coming. Q: Should I paint my house in spring or fall? Either can work. Late spring and summer usually give the longest stretches of warm, dry days. Fall can be good too, but in Ottawa the days get shorter and the nights colder quickly. ## Tell us what you'd like painted Start with a free in-home consultation. When you hire a painter for your own home, WSIB doesn't require you to collect a clearance certificate, but you can look up a contractor's WSIB status with WSIB's online clearance search. If the property is a rental or a business, the clearance rules can apply to you as the owner. Carleton Prime Painting has WSIB coverage. ## Ask about liability insurance Liability insurance can cover damage a contractor causes to your home or belongings during the work. Ask any painter whether they carry it. Many condo buildings ask for proof of it. Carleton Prime Painting carries liability insurance. ## Get the scope in writing A good estimate says exactly what's being painted, how many coats, what prep is included, who supplies the paint and what isn't included. Two estimates only compare fairly when they cover the same work. ## Know your rights in Ontario Ontario's Consumer Protection Act gives you some protection on home renovation work, painting included. Most agreements over $50 have to be in writing. If you sign a renovation contract of $50 or more in your own home, you have 10 days to cancel it for any reason, starting from the day you get a written copy. And if your contract includes an estimate, the final price can't be more than 10% over it unless you agree to new work or a new price. ## Ask how they prep Many paint jobs fail because of poor prep, not bad paint. Ask what the painter does about holes, cracks, peeling paint, glossy surfaces and stains. A vague answer is a warning sign. ## Ask about the warranty Ask how long the workmanship warranty lasts and what it covers. Carleton Prime Painting gives a 2-year warranty on painting. ## Read real reviews Look at Google reviews and read what customers actually say about the work, not only the star rating. Reviews that describe specific details tell you more than short ones. ## Watch out for - Cash-only deals with nothing in writing - A price far below everyone else's, which often means less prep or fewer coats - A large deposit demanded before anything is scheduled - No address, no insurance and no reviews Sources: WSIB: questions and answers about clearances, WSIB online clearance search, Ontario: your rights when starting home renovations or repairs Written by Carleton Prime Painting, Ottawa. Last updated October 23, 2026. ## Quick answers Q: What should a painting estimate include? It should list which rooms and surfaces are being painted, what prep is included, how many coats, who supplies the paint, the schedule, the warranty, and anything that isn't included. Q: Can I cancel a painting contract in Ontario? If you signed a home renovation contract of $50 or more in your own home, Ontario's Consumer Protection Act gives you 10 days to cancel it for any reason, counting from the day you got a written copy. If work started during those 10 days, you may have to pay a fair amount for the work and materials already provided. Q: Should a painter in Ontario have WSIB coverage? Most construction businesses in Ontario, painters among them, must have WSIB coverage, with some exceptions. You can check a contractor's status with WSIB's online clearance search. Carleton Prime Painting has WSIB coverage. Q: Is the cheapest painting quote the best one? Not always. A much lower price often means less prep or fewer coats. Compare what each estimate actually includes before you compare the prices. ## Tell us what you'd like painted Start with a free in-home consultation. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 ## Colour sets the mood Colour changes how a room feels long before you notice the furniture. Soft blues, greens and greys tend to feel calm, which is why they're popular in bedrooms and bathrooms. Warm whites, creams and earthy tones feel welcoming in living rooms and kitchens. Strong, saturated colours add energy and work well in smaller doses: a feature wall, a front door, a powder room. Darker colours can make a big room feel cosier, and lighter ones help a small room feel more open. ## Light changes everything A paint colour has no single look. It changes with the light that falls on it. In Canada, north-facing rooms get cooler, bluer light all day, which can make greys look cold. South-facing rooms get warm, bright light that can wash pale colours out. East-facing rooms are bright in the morning and dimmer later, and west-facing rooms are the opposite. Your bulbs matter too: warm and cool LED bulbs make the same wall look noticeably different at night. ## Undertones Most neutrals lean toward another colour. A grey can lean blue, green or purple, and a white can lean yellow, pink or blue. Undertones show up most next to other colours, like your floors, counters, trim and furniture. Holding a sample against those surfaces is the quickest way to spot one that clashes. ## How much light a colour reflects Paint makers list a light reflectance value, or LRV, for most colours, usually on the chip or the colour's web page. It runs from 0 (black) to 100 (pure white). A higher LRV bounces more light around the room, which helps in basements and dark hallways. ## Sheen changes how colour looks The same colour looks slightly different in different sheens. Glossier finishes reflect more light and can make a colour look a little lighter and richer. Flatter finishes look softer and hide bumps in the wall. ## Test before you commit - Paint large samples, or use peel-and-stick samples, rather than judging from a small chip. - Put them on more than one wall, including the darkest corner of the room. - Look at them in the morning, in the afternoon and at night with your lights on. - Keep them away from the old colour's edges, which change how you see the new one. - Live with them for a couple of days before you decide. ## Flow from room to room In open-concept homes, rooms you can see at the same time look best when their colours relate to each other. Many people keep one colour for the trim throughout the house and choose wall colours that sit comfortably side by side. Written by Carleton Prime Painting, Ottawa. Last updated October 23, 2026. ## Quick answers Q: Why does my paint colour look different on the wall than on the chip? The chip is small and seen in the store's light. On a whole wall, the colour is bigger, reflects onto itself and changes with the light in your room. That's why testing large samples at home matters. Q: What colour makes a room look bigger? Lighter colours with a higher light reflectance value (LRV) bounce more light around and make a room feel more open. Painting the trim and walls in similar tones also helps. Q: Which colours work in a north-facing room? North light is cool and bluish, so colours with warm undertones usually look better there than cool greys and blues, which can look cold. Q: How many paint samples should I test? Two or three serious candidates is usually enough. Test them large, on more than one wall, and look at them at different times of day. ## Tell us what you'd like painted Start with a free in-home consultation. Its first street, in Beaverbrook, was built in 1964, and Beaverbrook and Glen Cairn are its oldest neighbourhoods. Morgan's Grant followed from the late 1980s, and Kanata Lakes is still growing. Stittsville is older as a village, founded in 1854 around Carp Road and Hazeldean Road, but most of its homes went up after city water and sewer arrived in the 1980s. ## What that means for painting - 1960s and 1970s homes in Beaverbrook and Glen Cairn fall in the years when, according to Health Canada, exterior paint may contain lead. Old exterior trim should be checked before it's scraped or sanded. - 1980s to 2000s builder homes often still have their original flat wall paint, which scuffs and marks easily, and oak trim and cabinets that owners want brightened. - Newer townhomes often belong to a condo corporation that sets the exterior colours, so check before painting doors or trim outside. - Textured ceilings are common in older homes. Health Canada says asbestos was commonly used before 1990, so they should be tested before removal. ## Painting services in Kanata and Stittsville Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Barrhaven began in the 1960s and grew quickly from the 1980s on. Most of its homes are townhouses, and neighbourhoods like Half Moon Bay are still being built. ## What that means for painting - Bungalows built before 1960 probably contain lead-based paint, according to Health Canada, so prep has to be planned with that in mind. - Homes from the 1970s to the 2000s often have many coats on the trim and original builder paint on the walls that's ready for a proper repaint. - Newer Barrhaven homes are reaching their first full repaint. Builder-grade flat paint marks easily, and a washable finish in hallways and kids' rooms makes a big difference. - Townhouse blocks run by a condo corporation often have rules about exterior colours. ## Painting services in Nepean and Barrhaven Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Queenswood Heights was one of its first large suburbs in the 1960s, and Convent Glen and Orleans Woods followed in the 1970s. Chapel Hill and Fallingbrook were built in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly two-storey homes, often with brick fronts. Since 2000, Avalon, Notting Gate and Cardinal Creek have added townhouses, stacked townhouses and apartments, and condos are going up near Place d'Orleans and the new O-Train stations. ## What that means for painting - 1960s and 1970s homes fall in the years when, Health Canada says, exterior paint may contain lead. Original wood trim and soffits usually carry many coats. - Brick-front homes usually have painted siding or trim on the sides and back. Painting the brick itself is a decision to think through, because painted brick is very hard to undo. - Homes near the Ottawa River get more wind and moisture, and shaded walls can hold mildew, which has to be cleaned off before painting. - New condos and stacked townhomes come with building rules for contractors and exterior colours. ## Painting services in Orleans Interior paintingWalls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care. Greely boomed in the 2000s: the number of homes rose by more than half between 2000 and 2008, and most sit on lots of half an acre to two acres. ## What that means for painting - Riverside and wooded lots stay damp and shaded, which leads to mildew on siding and decks. It has to be cleaned off properly before painting. - Larger homes from the 2000s are reaching their first or second exterior repaint, often with high gables that need the right equipment to reach safely. - Decks, fences and outbuildings on big lots add up to a lot of wood to maintain. See deck and fence staining. - Rural homes on private wells and septic need wash water and paint waste kept well away from the well and the septic field. Its textile and lumber mills have closed, and the remaining mill buildings now hold condos and businesses. The town has a remarkable mix: limestone houses from the 1830s, red and yellow brick homes from the 1870s and 1880s, frame houses with elaborate porch woodwork, and many new subdivisions. Statistics Canada named it the fastest-growing municipality in Canada in 2021. ## What that means for painting - Old frame houses and porches usually carry many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint. Careful prep and containment matter. - Limestone and old brick should usually be left unpainted. Paint can trap moisture in masonry, and painted stone or brick is very hard to return to its original look. - New subdivision homes are due for their first repaints, inside and out. - Designated heritage homes: the Town designates individual properties under the Ontario Heritage Act, and owners can apply for a heritage grant for conservation work. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 5.0Google rating ## Homes in Perth Perth was settled in 1816 and shaped by Scottish stonemasons. Much of downtown sits on an island in the Tay River, and buildings like the 1863 Town Hall and Matheson House from 1840 give it a remarkably well-preserved historic downtown. Around the core are older frame and brick homes, and new subdivisions are planned on the edge of town. ## The downtown heritage district Downtown Perth is a Heritage Conservation District. The Town says heritage permits are needed for work that affects a building's architectural character, including changes to paint colour. The district plan advises against painting brick or stone that has never been painted, because paint can trap moisture and damage the masonry. If your property is in the district, check with the Town before you choose exterior colours. Permit questions go to the Town's heritage contact. The Town also runs a facade improvement grant for downtown buildings, which can include a new coat of paint. ## What that means for painting - Stone and brick are usually best left unpainted, and in the downtown district painting them needs a permit. - Older wood trim, windows and porches often carry many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint. - Historic colour palettes from paint makers are a good starting point for heritage homes. Its population was about the same in 2021 as in 1961, so a lot of its houses are older homes rather than new subdivisions. ## The new downtown heritage district In 2026 the Town designated a Downtown Smiths Falls Heritage Conservation District, centred on Beckwith Street. Properties in a heritage district need an alteration permit before changes. The district plan lists some painting, such as trim, window frames and doors, as exempt, and its policy is not to paint brick and stone that have never been painted. If your building is downtown, check with the Town's Development Services before exterior painting. ## What that means for painting - Older homes often have many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint, so prep is planned around that. - Brick and stone are usually best left unpainted. ## Why we work this way When a paint job disappoints, it's rarely the paint's fault. Get a free estimate 613-640-0800 ## About Carleton Prime Painting Q: Who is Carleton Prime Painting? We're a residential painting company in Ottawa, Ontario, and the painting division of Carleton Prime Construction. We paint the inside and outside of homes, cottages, apartments and condos across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. Q: What areas do you serve? Ottawa, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans, Greely, Manotick, Carleton Place, Perth, Smiths Falls and the rest of the Ottawa Valley. If you're not sure we cover your area, ask. Q: Are you insured? Yes. Carleton Prime Painting carries liability insurance and WSIB coverage. Q: Who does the painting? Our own painters. Carleton Prime is family owned and owner operated, and the team has over 100 years of combined experience. Q: Is Carleton Prime BBB accredited? Yes. Carleton Prime is a BBB Accredited Business. Q: When can I reach you? Any time. We're available 24/7 for calls, emails and estimate requests: 613-640-0800 or info@CarletonPrime.com. Q: What warranty do you give? A 2-year warranty on painting. Q: Is the consultation free? Yes. Every job starts with a free in-home consultation, and the written estimate that follows is free too. Q: Can painting be part of a bigger renovation? Yes. Carleton Prime Painting is part of Carleton Prime Construction, so the same company can do the renovation and then paint it. See carletonprime.com. Q: How do I get an estimate? Call 613-640-0800, email info@CarletonPrime.com, or fill in the free estimate form. ## Before the painters arrive Q: What should I do to get ready? Take down pictures and mirrors, put away ornaments and small items, and clear some space along the walls. We'll tell you exactly what to move at the consultation. Q: Do I need to be home while you paint? That's up to you. Many people stay home and use other rooms while we work. If you'd rather be out, we'll agree beforehand on how we get in and how we'll keep you posted. Q: How do I choose a colour? Paint a sample on the wall and look at it in the morning, in the evening and under your own lights before you decide. A colour on a small chip often looks different on a whole wall. You choose the colours, and we confirm them with you before we start. ## Paint and finishes Q: Do you leave paint for touch-ups? Yes. We leave the leftover paint from every colour we use, so you have it for colour matching and touch-ups later. Q: What paint do you use? We use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints, and choose the product to suit each surface and room. Q: Which sheen should I use? Flat and matte finishes hide bumps and patches best, so they suit ceilings and bedrooms. Eggshell and satin are easier to wipe clean, so they suit hallways, kitchens and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss is the toughest of the common finishes, which is why it's used on trim and doors. Q: Do I need primer? You need it on bare wood, new drywall and patched spots, over stains, and when you put water-based paint over old oil-based paint. It also helps with big colour changes. Repainting walls that are in good shape, in a similar colour, often doesn't need primer. Q: Does my older home have lead paint? Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, and exterior paint on homes built between 1960 and 1990 may contain lead. Paint that might contain lead shouldn't be sanded, scraped or burned off without knowing. Tell us when your home was built at the consultation. ## Timing Q: When can you paint outside in Ottawa? Usually late spring to early fall, on dry days when daytime and overnight temperatures stay above the minimum on the paint can. See the exterior painting season guide. Q: Can you paint inside in winter? Yes. Interior painting works all year round in a heated home, and winter is often a good time to get it done. Q: How long will my job take? It depends on the size of the job, how much prep it needs and how many coats it takes. Your written estimate includes the schedule, so you'll know before we start. ## Guides - When to paint a house exterior in Ottawa - How to choose a house painter in Ottawa - Choosing paint colours for your home Source for lead paint: Health Canada: lead-based paint ## Tell us what you'd like painted Start with a free in-home consultation.
