Interior painting in Ottawa
Walls, ceilings, trim and doors, prepped properly and painted with care.
5.0Google rating
Fresh paint changes how a room feels more than almost anything else you can do to it. It also shows every shortcut. Patches that weren't sanded, lines that wander onto the ceiling, a missed strip behind the toilet: those are what you notice every day afterwards.
Carleton Prime Painting paints the inside of houses, condos, apartments and cottages across Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. A single bedroom or every room in the house, the job gets the same thorough prep and the same clean finish.

Choosing a finish
Sheen matters as much as colour. Flatter finishes hide wall imperfections and suit ceilings and quiet rooms. Eggshell and satin are easier to wipe, which is why they're common in hallways, kitchens and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss stands up to the knocks trim and doors take. If you're not sure, we'll talk it through at the consultation and point out what each room needs.

Living in your home while we paint
Most people stay at home while their rooms are painted. We'll tell you ahead of time which rooms we're in and when, what to clear out, and when a room is ready to use again. At the end of each day the work area is tidied, so your house still works as a house.

What each room needs
Every room asks something different of the paint, so the prep and the finish change from room to room.
- Kitchens: walls near the stove collect a film of grease that paint won't stick to, so they get cleaned first. A finish you can wipe makes sense here.
- Bathrooms: steam and condensation lead to peeling and mildew. A paint made for bathrooms helps, and so does a working exhaust fan.
- Basements: damp is the enemy. If a wall is damp or shows white powder on concrete, painting over it won't fix the cause, and we'll tell you so.
- Hallways and stairwells: these take the most knocks and have the hardest walls to reach. They get a tougher finish and a safe setup for the high spots.
- Ceilings: a flat finish hides the small waves every ceiling has. Water stains need a stain-blocking primer, or they come straight back through.
Painting an older Ottawa home
Older houses in Ottawa often have plaster walls, many layers of old paint, and trim finished in oil-based paint. Water-based paint won't grip glossy oil paint without the right primer, and plaster cracks need proper filling, not just a coat of paint. Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint, so tell us when your home was built and we'll plan the prep with that in mind.
Changing colour
Going from a dark colour to a light one, or covering a strong colour like red, usually takes a primer or an extra coat. That's normal, and it's one of the things your estimate accounts for, so the price doesn't change halfway through.
In writing
What your written estimate spells out
Two painting quotes only compare fairly when they cover the same work. Ours lists the job in plain words, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
- Which rooms and surfaces are included, and which aren't
- The prep for each area: repairs, cleaning, sanding and primer
- How many coats
- Who supplies the paint
- The schedule, and what you need to move or clear
- The 2-year warranty on painting
What a painting customer said
I asked them to re-paint some rooms in my house, and the painter did an excellent job. The mistakes from years ago were erased. He even painted behind the toilets.

Our process
How your interior painting job works
Free in-home consultation
We come to you, walk the rooms or the outside of the house with you, and listen to what you want the finished result to look like.
A written estimate
You get the scope in writing: which surfaces, what prep, what's included and what isn't, so there are no surprises later.
A schedule that fits your life
We book the work around how you use your home, and tell you ahead of time what needs moving and when we'll be there.
Prep, then paint
Prep comes first and gets the time it needs. Then the painting, done carefully, and a clean site at the end of each day.
Walkthrough together
We go over every room or wall with you before we call it finished, and fix anything you're not happy with. The leftover paint stays with you for touch-ups.
Questions people ask
Do I need to move my furniture before you paint?
Please take down pictures and put away ornaments and anything breakable. Bigger furniture can usually stay in the room, moved away from the walls and covered. We'll tell you exactly what to move at the consultation.
Do you paint ceilings as well as walls?
Yes. Ceilings are part of interior painting. Tell us which rooms you want done and whether the ceilings are included, and the estimate will list them.
Can you fix dents and holes before painting?
Yes, the small ones. Filling nail holes, dents and hairline cracks is part of the prep. If we find bigger damage, like a large hole or a water stain, we'll point it out and explain it in your estimate.
How long does it take to paint a room?
It depends on the size of the room, how much prep it needs, and how many coats the colour takes. A lot of the time goes into prep and drying between coats. Your estimate includes the schedule, so you'll know before we start.
