Homes in Carleton Place

Carleton Place grew up around the falls on the Mississippi River from 1819, and became a town in 1890. Its textile and lumber mills have closed, and the remaining mill buildings now hold condos and businesses. The town has a remarkable mix: limestone houses from the 1830s, red and yellow brick homes from the 1870s and 1880s, frame houses with elaborate porch woodwork, and many new subdivisions. Statistics Canada named it the fastest-growing municipality in Canada in 2021.

What that means for painting

  • Old frame houses and porches usually carry many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint. Careful prep and containment matter.
  • Limestone and old brick should usually be left unpainted. Paint can trap moisture in masonry, and painted stone or brick is very hard to return to its original look.
  • New subdivision homes are due for their first repaints, inside and out.
  • Designated heritage homes: the Town designates individual properties under the Ontario Heritage Act, and owners can apply for a heritage grant for conservation work. If yours is designated, check with the Town's Development Services before exterior work.

What a painting customer said

I asked them to re-paint some rooms in my house, and the painter did an excellent job. The mistakes from years ago were erased. He even painted behind the toilets.

Painting in Carleton Place: questions

Do you paint older homes in Carleton Place?

Yes. Older homes need careful prep because of the many layers of old paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint.

Should I paint my stone or brick house?

Usually not. Paint can trap moisture in old masonry, and it's very hard to undo. If your home is a designated heritage property, check with the Town first.

Do you paint cottages on Mississippi Lake?

Yes. See our cottage painting page for how we plan cottage work.
