Smiths Falls grew up on the Rideau Canal, which passes through town with locks at three sites, and became a railway and factory town. Its population was about the same in 2021 as in 1961, so a lot of its houses are older homes rather than new subdivisions.

The new downtown heritage district

In 2026 the Town designated a Downtown Smiths Falls Heritage Conservation District, centred on Beckwith Street. Properties in a heritage district need an alteration permit before changes. The district plan lists some painting, such as trim, window frames and doors, as exempt, and its policy is not to paint brick and stone that have never been painted. If your building is downtown, check with the Town's Development Services before exterior painting.

What that means for painting

  • Older homes often have many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint, so prep is planned around that.
  • Brick and stone are usually best left unpainted. Already-painted brick needs a paint made for masonry.
  • Historic colours from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams are a good starting point for older homes. The Smiths Falls district plan points to both.
