Siding, stucco and brick painting in Ottawa
Every exterior surface needs its own prep and its own paint.
5.0Google rating
Not every house in Ottawa is wood. Many have vinyl or aluminum siding, stucco, brick, or a mix. Each one takes paint differently, and using the wrong product or skipping the right prep is the fastest way to a peeling exterior.
Carleton Prime Painting paints all of these surfaces. Here's what each one needs.
- Free in-home consultation
- 2-year warranty on painting
- Liability insurance
- WSIB coverage
- Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints
- Our own painters, family owned
- BBB Accredited Business
Wood siding
Wood needs loose paint scraped off, bare spots primed and soft or rotten boards replaced before painting. Joints and gaps get caulked so water can't get behind the paint.

Vinyl and aluminum siding
Both can be painted once they're cleaned thoroughly, with paint made for the surface. Aluminum siding often has a chalky surface that has to be washed off first. With vinyl, a colour much darker than the original can make the siding absorb heat and warp, so paint makers offer "vinyl-safe" colours for it.

Stucco
Stucco has a rough, porous surface that needs a paint made for masonry and the right application to fill the texture. Cracks are repaired first, because water getting into stucco is what damages it in an Ottawa freeze and thaw.

Brick: think before you paint
Painting brick changes the look of a house for good. Once brick is painted, getting it back to bare brick is difficult and expensive. Brick also needs to let moisture out, so it needs a breathable masonry paint, not ordinary house paint. If your brick has white, powdery marks (efflorescence), that's a sign of moisture to deal with first. If your house is in a heritage area, check with your municipality before painting masonry.

What a painting customer said
I asked them to re-paint some rooms in my house, and the painter did an excellent job. The mistakes from years ago were erased. He even painted behind the toilets.

A schedule that fits your life
We book the work around how you use your home, and tell you ahead of time what needs moving and when we'll be there.
Prep, then paint
Prep comes first and gets the time it needs. Then the painting, done carefully, and a clean site at the end of each day.

We go over every room or wall with you before we call it finished, and fix anything you're not happy with. The leftover paint stays with you for touch-ups.
Questions people ask
Can you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, after a thorough cleaning and with paint made for vinyl. Choose a colour close to or lighter than the original, or a vinyl-safe colour, because dark colours can make vinyl warp in the sun.
Should I paint my brick house?
Think it through first. Painted brick is very hard to return to bare brick. If you go ahead, the brick needs a breathable masonry paint, and any moisture problems should be fixed first.
Can stucco be painted?
Yes, with a paint made for masonry, after cracks are repaired so water can't get in behind the paint.
Do I need permission to paint my house exterior?
Usually not. If your home is in a heritage district or is a designated heritage property, check with your municipality first, especially before painting brick or stone.
