Homes in Perth

Perth was settled in 1816 and shaped by Scottish stonemasons. Much of downtown sits on an island in the Tay River, and buildings like the 1863 Town Hall and Matheson House from 1840 give it a remarkably well-preserved historic downtown. Around the core are older frame and brick homes, and new subdivisions are planned on the edge of town.

The downtown heritage district

Downtown Perth is a Heritage Conservation District. The Town says heritage permits are needed for work that affects a building's architectural character, including changes to paint colour. The district plan advises against painting brick or stone that has never been painted, because paint can trap moisture and damage the masonry. If your property is in the district, check with the Town before you choose exterior colours. Permit questions go to the Town's heritage contact.

The Town also runs a facade improvement grant for downtown buildings, which can include a new coat of paint.

What that means for painting

  • Stone and brick are usually best left unpainted, and in the downtown district painting them needs a permit.
  • Older wood trim, windows and porches often carry many layers of paint, and Health Canada says homes built before 1960 probably contain lead paint.
  • Historic colour palettes from paint makers are a good starting point for heritage homes. The Perth district plan recommends one.

What a painting customer said

I asked them to re-paint some rooms in my house, and the painter did an excellent job. The mistakes from years ago were erased. He even painted behind the toilets.

Painting in Perth: questions

Do I need a permit to paint my house in downtown Perth?

It depends on the work. The Town says heritage permits are needed for work affecting a building's character, including paint colour changes, and painting unpainted brick or stone needs a permit. Check with the Town of Perth before you start.

Can I paint the stone on my Perth house?

It's usually a bad idea. Paint can trap moisture in stone and damage it, and in the downtown heritage district it needs a heritage permit.

Do you paint homes outside downtown Perth?

Yes. We paint homes and cottages across Perth and the surrounding area.
